The Honduran Curly Hair Tarantula (Brachypelma Albopilosum) is a medium sized new world tarantula. It is commonly found in Costa Rica close by to a direct water source such as a river, preferring humid environments. This sturdy spider is covered in very dark hairs with a distinguishable covering of lighter coloured curly bristly hairs giving it a woolly look. They are a fairly medium size of tarantula with a leg span of up to 5.5 inches if not more. They have a very docile and calm temperament which allows them to be a good beginner’s tarantula to those new to the hobby as they are quite easy to handle and unlikely to be aggressive.

Scientific name:

Brachypelma Albopilosum

Distribution:

South America – Costa Rica and Honduras

Natural habitat:

A burrower that can be located in scrublands and forests.

Food:

In its natural habitat the Honduran Curly Hair Tarantula would feast on mice, crickets and insects in general. This species of tarantula has a very hearty appetite.

Lifespan:

A fairly short lifespan, females can live up to 10 years. The males live on average of up to 4 years.

Mating:

Like many species of tarantulas the female is far larger than the male. She can be temperamental to her potential suitor and may end up making him a meal. The female will be more tolerable of the males if he attempts to mate with her after she has molted. The male will drum with his petapalps to get the attention of the female. If she is read to mate she will allow him to raise her up and inseminate her. If successful he will be able to move away before the female chooses to attack him.

Housing:

A medium size fairly shallow enclosure will be suitable for this species. Anything with the walls too high the tarantula could climb and risk falling and injuring itself. Good ventilation is required and a good sturdy lid.

If you need help buying an enclosure why not check out our enclosure review. Click here for the article.

Habitat layout:

The Honduran Curly Hair Tarantula very much enjoys burrowing. So providing a good five or six inches with of suitable substrate will be appreciated. Peat moss mixed with coconut husk substrate is acceptable and can be purchased online or at pet shops. Your tarantula will appreciate you providing a little hideaway. Even though they are quite happy to bask in the open; a hideaway they can burrow under if they get scared is a great option. Make sure this is secure and will not easily move as this could injure your tarantula. Again, suitable housing can be found at all decent pet stores.

Development rate:

This is debated among enthusiasts. Some say it is on the slower scale of growth rate, while others claim on a good diet and loving care they can grow very fast.

Temperature:

The needs of the Honduran Curly Hair tarantula are fairly simple. Not too hot and not too cold. Heating lamps are not necessary, but strongly recommended to now allow them to be exposed to direct sunlight. Room temperature is fine. However in winter months a heater nearby should be used to stop the temperature falling too low. Heating pads should never be used as this could seriously burn and injure the tarantula. However they do have humidity needs. The humidity of the enclosure should always be kept quite high; around 80%. This can be raised even higher during the summer months as long as your enclosure has suitable ventilation.

Personality:

They are quite calm and laid back, not prone to aggressive behavior.

Reproduction:

If mating has been successful the female will lay an egg sac containing up to 500 eggs. It is argued how soon after mating a female will lay her sac. However after 6 weeks the slings (babies) should break free from the sac.
