The Singapore Blue tarantula (Lampropelma Violaceopes) is a true long legged exotic beauty. It is a very large old world tarantula. They are found commonly in Singapore and Malaysia in the jungle areas. The appearance of this tarantula is what has made it so appealing to enthusiasts. The females are a striking blue with a darker abdomen. The males of this species do not sport such vibrancy in colour, however after reaching adulthood their colour will change from blue to green or yellow, or a mixture of both The Singapore blue is the largest tree dwelling tarantulas with the female growing up to an impressive 11 inches, the male slightly smaller. These tarantulas are not recommended for a beginner due to their aggressive temperament and will rarely tolerate handling. Unlike new world spiders they will not hesitate to give a nasty venomous bite.

Scientific name:

Lampropelma Violaceopes

Distribution:

Malaysia and Singapore

Natural habitat:

Tropical rainforests.

Food:

With a hearty appetite there is not much this giant cannot take down. However it is important to provide your tarantula with a varied diet rich in nutrients. This can consist of insects, lizards, mice and beetles. They should be fed every other week.

Lifespan:

An average lifespan. The females can live up to 14 years while the males live on average of five. The tree living variety of tarantulas such as this species, do not live as long as their terrestrial cousins do.

Mating:

Like many species of tarantulas the female is far larger than the male. She can be temperamental to her potential suitor and has been said by enthusiasts that her making a meal of the male signifies a successful mating. The female which be more tolerable of the males attempts to mate with her after she has moulted. The male will drum with his petapalps to get the attention of the female. If she is read to mate she will allow him to raise her up and inseminate her. If successful he will be able to move away before the female chooses to attack him.

Housing:

Due to their fondness of tree climbing; an enclosure that is taller than it is wide is needed. This is an exceptionally large tarantula so a very large enclosure is needed. A very secure lid is needed as these spiders have a skill for escaping.

Habitat layout:

The Singapore Blue tarantula will very much appreciate a habitat that mimics their natural environment. As this is a tree dwelling tarantula and not a burrower, only a thin layer of a couple of inches of substrate at the bottom of the enclosure is necessary. Coconut husk is fine, but with added moss which will help keep the humidity levels in the enclosure. Plenty of bark and tree branches are necessary for them to climb on. A little hideaway is appreciated but not always necessary. The humidity levels need to be kept well around the 70% mark. Using a spray bottle to spray mists of water in the enclosure should help with humidity.

Development rate:

This is heatedly debated amount enthusiasts, but agreed that they are very fast developers. Some saying they reach maturity after a single year.

Temperature:

The Singapore Blue tarantula requires a lot of care in this department. During the day the temperature should be kept at around 26 degrees centigrade and lowered to around 21 degrees centigrade during the night. Tarantulas are not partial to light, so heat lighting is not recommended, though if necessary a red bulb should be used. However the owner should be prepared to keep a closer eye on the humidity levels.

Personality:

Not particularly friendly and can be very aggressive. Handling of this tarantula is not recommended as they can be very fast.

Reproduction:

If mating has been successful the female will lay an egg sac containing up 100 eggs. It is argued how soon after mating a female will lay her sac. However after 8 – 12 weeks the slings (babies) should break free from the sac.
